An Introduction to Italy

Whether you have never been to Italy or keep going back, this 10-day exploration of Italy’s classic trio -  Venice, Florence and Rome - is sure to appeal with a combination of guided tours and free time in each city as well as visits to the several countryside gems such as Pisa and Lucca.  Tour includes most meals as well as lunch and an olive oil tasting at a local agriturismo. Our popular Italian tour escorts Vince and Jan Sacilotto will be with you to assist in making this your ideal Italian holiday.

Day 1 - Friday, July 05: Flight from Toronto

Evening departure from Toronto on Air Transat service to Venice, Italy.  Full inflight services will be provided.

Day 2 - Saturday, July 06: Arrival in Venice

Morning arrival in Venice where you are met by your private coach and taken to Mestre, a neighborhood of Venice located on the mainland.  Time to settle in and recover from your jetlag before meeting as a group for a welcome drink and dinner at local family run restaurant known as a trattoria. Overnight.

Day 3 - Sunday, July 07: Venice

Breakfast at the hotel before transferring by vaporetto to St. Marks Square.  Here you will be joined by a local guide for a detailed sightseeing tour of Venice’s historic centre.  Highlights include the Doge Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Cathedral, the Rialto Bridge and the  beautiful canals that Venice is famous for.  In the late afternoon you return to Mestre.  Dinner and overnight.  

Day 4 - Monday, July 08: Florence

Breakfast at the hotel before boarding the coach and transferring to a gondola-making workshop for a firsthand look at how the famous gondolas of Venice are made.  Following the visit you make your way to Florence where on arrival you will enjoy a walking tour of the city centre.   Highlights include: the Duomo, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry with its famous bronze doors, the Ponte Vecchio, and Santa Croce church.  Check into the hotel following the tour.  Dinner and overnight.

Day 5 - Tuesday, July 09: Florence

Our focus this morning is the Accademia Museum where you will find many works of art including The David by Michelangelo.  Following the guided visit you are free to explore Florence on your own.  However, we will meet again in the evening for another wonderful Italian dinner at a local eatery.   

Day 6 - Wednesday, July 10: Florence

Breakfast at the hotel followed by a full day excursion to the nearby centres of Pisa and Lucca.  Guided tours of both cities, including a visit to Miracle Square, home of San Lorenzo church, the Baptistry and the famous “Leaning Tower”, will make this a special day indeed.  Return to Florence in the late afternoon.  Dinner and overnight.  

Day 7 - Thursday, July 11: Rome

Early morning departure from Florence with a stop at a local agriturismo where you enjoy a fabulous lunch, olive oil tasting as well as a sip or two…or three of wine before continuing to the Italian capital, Rome.  On arrival will be a visit to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum with your guide before continuing to the hotel.  No group dinner this evening but your guide will be happy to suggest some favorite restaurants in the area.  

Day 8 - Friday, July 12: Rome

Following breakfast you are joined by your guide for a tour of Monumental Rome. Highlights include the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. Balance of the day free. May we suggest a visit to Palazzo Valentini where remains of the original Roman villa are on display or the Villa Borghese, a wonderful art museum and gardens in the area of Via Veneto (advance reservations required for both).  We look forward to hearing about everyone’s adventure at our group dinner in one of Rome’s many fine restaurants later this


Day 9 - Saturday, July 13: Rome

Morning transfer to the Vatican City for a guided tour of the Museum with its many fine treasures including the magnificent Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Following your tour will be free time for last minute sightseeing in the Eternal City.  Arrivederci dinner in one of Rome’s many wonderful restaurants.  Overnight.

Day 10 - Sunday, July 14: Flight home

Breakfast at the hotel before transferring to the Rome Airport for your Air Transat flight to Toronto.
