Food Focus: Piedmont

Join tour host Lori Chisholm and her local expert guide Matteo Gazzarata on this foodie and cultural adventure to the “foot of the mountains” where risotto and gorgeous red wines rule the food menu and rice fields and expansive vineyards rule the landscape. The stately city of Torino with its Guarini Baroque architecture will be our first home base – we’ll enjoy vitello tonnato, chocolate, coffee, and vermouth. From there we’ll move to medieval Asti featuring noble towers and a Gothic Cathedral – we’ll indulge in sparkling wine and tajarin. Historical and food tours, winery and farm visits, a cooking class and a truffle hunt are all part of the package in this relatively under-touristed region of Italia.  Max 11 guests.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Friday, October 16: Turin (D)

Check in to Turin’s beautiful, 4-star Hotel Majestic ( www.starhotels.com/en/our-hotels/majestic-turin ) in time to freshen up before a welcome cocktail followed by our first group dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight.

Day 2 - Saturday, October 17: Turin (B,L)

This morning after breakfast, we’ll meet our local guide, Matteo, for a walking tour and introduction to Turin’s most notable food and drink. After the tour, we’ll make our way to the top of Turin with a visit to Mole Antoniellana. The rest of your time is free. Overnight .

Day 3 - Sunday, October 18: Turin (B, T) (T=Tasting)

This morning after breakfast, Matteo will walk us around the historic centre of Turin to introduce us to the history and architecture of “little Paris”. After lunch on your own, it’ll be time for chocolate. We’ll jump on public transportation to reach our chocolate workshop in the Crocetta District. Gianduiotti here we come! Upon return, you have free time. Overnight.

Day 4 - Monday, October 19: Beltrame (B, L)

We have an early departure and some travel time ahead of us today to reach a special farm tour and cooking demonstration with lunch. Today, you have to trust me. In other words, I’m not telling you what type of farm we’ll be visiting or what we’ll be eating! We should be back in Turin near dinnertime. Overnight .

Day 5 - Tuesday, October 20: Turin Countryside (B, D)

Today after breakfast, Matteo will lead us out to the Royal Palace of Venaria Reale, one of 14 Royal Savoy residences, for a tour of the palace and gardens. After lunch here on your own, we’ll return to Turin and regroup for a cooking class and dinner at the home of Gabriele. Overnight.

Day 6 - Wednesday, October 21: Asti (B, D)

After breakfast and checkout, we are moving to Asti, a short ride away where we’ll stay at our second home base, Hotel Aleramo ( www.aleramo.it ). Upon arrival, Matteo will lead us on a city tour and a visit of the historic archives. The rest of the afternoon will be free for exploration but we’ll meet again for a group dinner at a family-run restaurant. Overnight.

Day 7 - Thursday, October 22: Agliano Terme (B, T, L, T)

Piedmont is known for its truffles. After breakfast, in Costigliole d’Asti, we’ll join a trufalau and his trusty dog to see if we can find our own truffles in the countryside. After some tastings there, we’ll enjoy a light lunch together and visit a Barbera winery on the way back to Asti. Dinner on your own. Overnight Asti.

Day 8 - Friday, October 23: Canelli (B, T, L, T)

After breakfast, we’ll visit a winery renowned for its sparkling wines and historic cellars. Here we’ll be tasting champagne-method wines then visit the town for a group lunch. Finally, we’ll stop at a cheese farm in Moasca to experience typical piemontese goat cheese. Dinner on your own. Overnight Asti. 

Day 9 - Saturday, October 24: Alba (B, T)

After breakfast, we’ll start the touring day with a winery visit in Neive to try Barbaresco, the prince of red Italian wines. Moving on to Alba, we have entrance tickets for the International White Truffle Festival. A late afternoon return to Asti will leave you with some time for aperitivi before dinner on your own. Overnight Asti.

Day 10 - Sunday, October 25: Asti (B, D)

Today you are free to relax, revisit or retail! You’ll have an Asti museum pass to use as you like. We’ll get together for our farewell aperitivo and group dinner at a private home – be ready for an evening of great food, friendship and tale telling. Overnight.

Day 11 - Monday, October 26: Asti and Onwards (B)

The tour is officially over after breakfast.
