ITINERARY

Day 1 - Monday, August 21: Arrival in St. John's

Arrive in St. John’s, Newfoundland where you will be greeted by your “Local” tour guide who will provide a warm welcome, baggage service and an expert and entertaining interpretation on the short drive to your downtown hotel. Early arrivals will appreciate an opportunity to explore the many boutiques, galleries and historic attractions found within easy walking distance of the hotel. Tonight we will enjoy a welcome reception, meet your fellow travelers and learn more about the adventure ahead. Overnight St. John’s. Welcome Reception.

Day 2 - Tuesday, August 22:

This morning we will tour historic St. John’s, the oldest city in North America. This trip includes a visit to Cabot Tower and Signal Hill where we can view the famous “Narrows” and admire the architecture of old St. John’s. We also visit the National Park at Cape Spear, the most  easterly point of land in North America. Explore the bunkers built by Canadian soldiers in the side of the cliffs during the Second World War. Then we travel to the historic Irish outport, Bay Bulls. Here we take a boat ride out to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve Bird Islands, home to thousands of Atlantic Puffins, Murres and Kittiwakes in the spring and summer. We will also be looking for whales, which frequent this bay in the summer months. Overnight St. John’s. Breakfast & Midday Meal.

Day 3 - Wednesday, August 23: Trinity Area

Today we will go “around the bay" and enjoy the picturesque coastline of Conception Bay and its many stories of Canadian Invasions, famous pirates and World War lore. We’ll make lots of photo stops and enjoy a lovely morning stroll through the town of Brigus, an historic sailing port from which Captain Bob Bartlett made the first voyage to the North Pole with William Perry. Overnight Trinity/Clarenville. Breakfast, Midday & Dinner.

Day 4 - Thursday, August 24: Bonavista

Bonavista was the landfall of John Cabot, who exclaimed “Buenavista” upon his first view in 1497. This proved a most significant world event, as the island’s rich cod stocks would represent a 500 year supply of protein for all the world to avail. The town has restored much of its historic properties, including the ‘Ryan Premises’ which serves as a brilliant interpretive site for our inshore fishery. We’ll walk the cliffs at Cape Bonavista, the “Dungeons”, and the ‘Root Cellar Capital of the World’. After lunch we’ll explore the south side of Bonavista Bay and the many unique photos we’ll capture along the way. We will head to Trinity in the afternoon, visiting the handiwork.

Day 5 - Friday, August 25: Gander

We’ll wind our way around the beautiful coatsline of Terra Nova National Park this morning with stops at the Marine Interpretation Center as well as the historic fishing village of Salvage. Following a delightful seaside lunch we’ll continue our westward journey to visit the town of Gander, with its aviation museum and the architecturally significant Airport that once greeted
guests from all over during an era when it was known as the ‘Crossroads of the World’.Overnight Gander. Breakfast, Midday Meal & Dinner

Day 6 - Saturday, August 26: Twillingate Island

This morning we head ‘Down North’ on the “Road to the Isles”, before travelling across "Tickles and Runs" to spend time on beautiful Twillingate Island. We’ll start the morning with a visit to the Beothuck Centre in Boyd’s Cove where we learn about the native groups that once occupied Newfoundland. Then its off to one of Newfoundland's oldest and most interesting fishing communities where we’ll visit the lighthouse at Crow Head, the Auk Island Winery for a sample of their wares and spend some time shopping or browsing the many interesting historic properties for which the area is so famous. Overnight Gander. Breakfast & Midday Meal.

Day 7 - Sunday, August 27: Grand Falls-Windsor

This morning we take a leisurely trip to the central Newfoundland logging town of Grand Falls-Windsor. Here we visit the Exploits River to watch the Atlantic Salmon make their way up one of the fishways on this massive river system. Later we’ll contiue to the beautiful town of King’s Point for a lovely seaside lunch with plenty of time to visit the whaling interpretation and a local
pottery studio before we continue to Gros Morne National Park for the next two nights. Overnight Rocky Harbour/Cow Head. Breakfast & Midday Meal.

Day 8 - Monday, August 28: Gros Morne Park

This day’s adventure is dedicated to Gros Morne National Park & UNESCO World Heritage Site; starting with an interpretive boat tour across the gentle waters of beautiful Bonne Bay. In Woody Point we’ll visit the park’s new Discovery Centre and view the famous Tableland Mountains. It is this area that earned the park its nickname as the 'Galapagos of Plate Tectonics'. Overnight Rocky Harbour/Cow Head. Breakfast & Midday Meal.

Day 9 - Tuesday, August 29: The Viking Trail

This morning we will travel along the ‘Viking Trail’ to experience some of the most spectacular coastline in North America on . We will enjoy many wonderful stops including the National Historic Park at Port au Choix, which interprets the intriguing history and lifestyle of the Maritime Archaic people who lived here over 3000 years ago. Overnight Plum Point/St. Anthony. Breakfast, Midday Meal & Dinner.

Day 10 - Wednesday, August 30: L'Anse aux Meadows

Today we spend time in St. Anthony, the home of the famous medical missionary, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, who brought modern medicine to northern Newfoundland and the remote communities of coastal Labrador. The highlight of this day is our visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site at L'Anse aux Meadows, home of Lief the Lucky and the Norse people who settled this area as early as the year 1000 A.D. Overnight Plum Point/St. Anthony. Breakfast & Midday Meal.

Day 11 - Thursday, August 31: Deer lake

Today we will make our way back down the Great Northern Peninsula to explore the rugged coastline with stops to visit The Arches and enjoy an interpretation of the many unique and wonderful geological formations for which Newfoundland is so famous. This evening we share our farewell dinner.
Overnight Deer Lake. Breakfast, Midday Meal & Dinner.

Day 12 - Friday, September 01: Flight home

All good things must come to an end and so we bid a fond farewell to our newest yet oldest Province. As you fly homeward it will be with many delightful memories of an authentic Newfoundland educational experience that will be recalled for years to come. Breakfast & Transfer to Deer Lake Airport.
