Join us for a relaxing holiday on Croatia’s fabulous Dalmatian Coast! Staying in a fine first-classseaside hotel from where we will enjoy excursions along the coast and in the interior, with as highlights the Krka Waterfalls and the picturesque old towns of Sibenik, Trogir, and Split, famous for Diocletian’s Palace. Vince and Jan Sacilotto will lead the way together with our wonderful local guides.
Individual flights to Split, Croatia.
Arrival in Split and immediate transfer by private coach to the first-class/four-star resort Hotel Amadria Park (https://www.amadriapark.com/hotel/amadria-park-hotel-jure-ex-solaris-sibenik), located on the wonderful waterfront just outside the historical town of Sibenik, one of the jewels of Croatia’s wonderful Dalmatian Coast, facing the Adriatic Sea. Check in followed by free time to settle in. This evening, we enjoy the first of our daily delicious buffet dinners in the hotel.
Morning tour of historic Sibenik and its beautiful waterfront and old town, featuring noble residences, monasteries, and churches. The absolute highlight is the late-medieval Cathedral of St James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose architecture and sculptures, a fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architecture and art, reflect influence from Northern Italy and as far away as Tuscan (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/963). Time for lunch, individual exploring, and shopping before we return to our resort hotel to relax and or enjoy a walk along the beach – and/or a traditional glass of the famous local plum brandy (šljivovica) in the bar? - before dinner.
Full-day excursion to Trogir, a quaint coastal community with ancient Greek origins, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/810). Our walking tour will include all the medieval, Renaissance, and baroque buildings and other historic landmarks. Also free time to shop, explore on your own, and have lunch. In the afternoon, return to Sibenik along the scenic coastal road.
Day at leisure. An optional excursion will be available to another pearl of the Dalmatian Coast, the small island city of Primošten,connected to the mainland by a short causeway (http://www.tz-primosten.hr/en), and the nearby community of Jurlinovi dvori, a combination of traditional rural settlement and artist colony, including a lunch of typical regional culinary specialties (http://www.jurlinovidvori.org/index.php/en).
Excursion to wonderful Krka National Park,featuring pools and waterfalls of the Krka River, to be visited via wooden bridges, pathways, and by boat. Lunch is included and will likely fesature the local specialty Skradine, a risotto that takes 10-12 hours to prepare and swept the late Anthony Bourdain off his feet during the filming of his show.
Full day tour of Split, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our visit will focus on the magnificent seafront and the impressive ruins of the palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian, built around 300 AD, one of the best preserved late-antiquity buildings in the world.
Full-day excursion to Hvar, one of the most picturesque of the thousands of islands that litter Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, ruled for many centuries by the Venetians, who created the harbor, the piazzas, the 14th-century Cathedral and the formidable Arsenal. Lunch is included and will likely feature the local specialty, trout.
Full-day excursion to two more beautiful and interesting Dalmatian towns, Zadar and Nin. Zadar’s old town features sights such as St. Donat's, a pre-Romanesque former church that has become the symbol of Zadar, and the Roman Forum; another local attraction is the Sea Organ on the waterfront, an “instrument,” designed by a local architect, Nikola Bašic, that works with the motion of the waves! The nearby small town of Nin, historically important as a centre of Christianity and associated with a famous Croatian saint, Gregory of Nin, is located on a small islet in a lagoon, surrounded by sandy beaches and linked to the mainland by two stone bridges dating back to the 16th century.
Your final day on the Dalmatian coast is entirely at leisure to allow for an opportunity for to add on a side trip of your choosing or simply relax and enjoy the facilities of the hotel.
Early breakfast before transferring to the airport for individual return flights to Toronto.
