Join the Brantford Opera Guild in celebrating their 40th anniversary on this leisurely tour to Germany and Austria. This festival tour includes flights and land package and performance options have been provided, allowing you to select the show and seating you would like. Munich Festival performances are included in the itinerary. The Salzburg Festival performances will be added (late Fall) once they have been announced.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Friday, July 20:

Evening departure from Toronto on Air Canada’s direct service to Munich, Germany.  Dinner as well as a light snack served during the flight.

Day 2 - Saturday, July 21:

Morning arrival in Munich where you are met by your tour manager and transferred to your home for the next five nights, the H+ Hotel Munchen or similar. Time to settle in before gathering for a welcome cocktail followed by dinner.

Tonight’s Performance: Marstallplatz

Day 3 - Sunday, July 22:

Buffet breakfast at the hotel, followed by a half-day guided tour of Munich. Pulsating with energy and commerce, yet charmingly wedded to its historic past, Munich is an exciting city to visit and a charming town to walk around. On this two-hour tour with an expert guide you will be introduced to many of its major attractions and told about some of the city’s legends. Highlights of this morning’s tour include: the Marienplatz, dominated by the Old and New Town Hall and a stroll through the inner city to see sites such as the Frauenkirche, Cuvillies Theatre and the former royal palaces of the Munich Residenz. Lunch in a typical restaurant in the city centre followed by a free afternoon.

Day 4 - Monday, July 23:

Breakfast, followed by a private tour of Munich Opera House. Discover a new side to the Munich Opera by taking a tour of the National Theatre. The tour is chock-full of information about the theatre and provides a behind the scenes glimpse into all of the hard work that occurs before you hear, “curtains up!” You’ll hear interesting stories about the architecture, and the famous people who’ve influenced the opera house over the last 350 years. The tour includes the Royal Hall, the Ionic Hall, the Auditorium and, depending on availability, the Stage! For an extra special experience, we then take an exclusive tour of the Bayerische Staatsoper, including areas not typically open to the public, followed by a sure-highlight, the chance to meet and hear from members of the company as they share their experiences working at a world-famous opera house! Balance of the day free.

Day 5 - Tuesday, July 24:

Today, you’ll enjoy a full-day excursion to Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof.  Travel by coach into the Bavarian alpine countryside and learn about the mystery and legends behind mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Visit his fairytale castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof and enjoy sweeping views of the surroundings.  During the tour you will hear about the life and passions of Ludwig and discover the story behind his mysterious death. Time permitting there will also be a stop in Oberamagau, home of the Passion play held once every decade. Lunch is included in today’s tour. Return to Munich in the late afternoon.

Day 6 - Wednesday, July 25:

Buffet breakfast at the hotel, followed by a free day to pursue your own interests. We suggest a visit to the Alte Pinakotheke, one of the oldest galleries in the world and home to one of the most famous collections of Old Master paintings.

Day 7 - Thursday, July 26:

Buffet breakfast at the hotel, followed by a walk from Sendlinger Tor to Isartor. In the Middle Ages, the city of Munich was within the boundaries of today’s Old Town. As any medieval city, it was walled and to get in and out one had to go through one of the city’s gates. Our stroll through the Old Town takes you from one gate to another. Some of the highlights on today’s tour will include; the Asamkirche church, one of the most elegant and magnificent buildings in Munich, Viktualienmarkt, one of the main shopping areas of the city and the Munich synagogue, Ohel Jacob. This new synagogue was built about a decade ago on the site of the old one destroyed by the Nazis. Lunch is included as part of today’s program. Balance of the day free.

Day 8 - Friday, July 27:

Buffet breakfast at the hotel, followed by departure from Munich. Our destination is Salzburg, but before crossing into Austria we will stop to visit Herrenchiemsee Castle - yet another indulgence built by Bavarian King Ludwig II, this time as a tribute to Versailles. The castle is located on the largest island in the Lake Chiemsee - the Herreninsel. Afternoon arrival at our hotel Star Inn Salzburg Zentrum. Lunch and dinner are both included today. Overnight.

Day 9 - Saturday, July 28:

Today you will explore the center of Salzburg. From New Town to Old Town, learn about the area's diverse history. Experience the culture of Salzburg, the history of Mozart and enjoy an amazing panoramic view from Mönchsberg Hill. Our tour will also include an orientation of Salzburg’s most famous street, the Getreidegasse, which is especially renowned for its wrought iron trade signs as well as Mozart’s birthplace. Lunch in a typical restaurant in the city center, followed by a free afternoon.  No group dinner tonight.

Day 10 - Sunday, July 29:

Get ready for a full-day-tour, featuring breathtaking countryside views of locations used in the making 'The Sound of Music,’ including: Leopoldskrone Palace, the Gazebo at Hellbrunn, the area of St Gilgen on the Wolfgang Lake, plus Mondsee where the wedding church is situated. Following lunch (included), we motor to Konigssee (Kings Lake) for a boat ride that will offer more fabulous views - this time of the Bavarian Alps! Return to Sazburg in the late afternoon. Balance of the day free.

Day 11 - Monday, July 30:

Another boat ride today, this time along the river where you will discover the old city of Salzburg and admire the gorgeous façades as you make your way to Hellbrunn.  Arrival at Hellbrunn dock and transfer to a London-style double-decker bus, which will bring you to Hellbrunn Palace (Schloss Hellbrunn), an attraction world-famous for its water features in the palace's expansive gardens. Audio guide included so you can visit the palace and gardens at your own pace.  Return to Salzburg following the visit. Tonight we have planned a Marionette performance at Salzburg Marionette Theatre. The visit may be changed depending on the festival schedule. Dinner either before or after the performance.

Day 12 - Tuesday, July 31:

Today we will visit the 900 year old Hohenwerfen Castle. A former defensive bastion, the castle stands amid extraordinary countryside, enthroned high above the Salzach River Valley. Visit to the castle followed by lunch at a restaurant in the countryside.  Return to Salzburg following lunch. Balance of the day free.

Day 13 - Wednesday, August 01:

Your last day, so we have left it free to spend as you please. We recommend an optional excursion to Austria's Lake District on a guided tour from Salzburg, to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region. Journey along the emerald-green Fuschlsee, see the emperor's summer palace in Bad Ischl and then continue to St. Gilgen to take a stunning photo of the beautiful scenery from a great view point. Next, make your way through picturesque Bad Goisern to reach one of the highlights of the tour at the stunning town of Hallstatt, considered the pearl of Austria's Lake District. Upon arrival in Hallstatt, your guide will point out all the hidden gems and must-see sights. You will have time to explore the town and enjoy lunch in one of the lakeside restaurants (own expense). Leave Hallstatt and make your way back to Salzburg via the Gosausee Lake, where a backdrop of the glistening Dachstein glacier awaits you for a short stop. Tour cost approximately $85 CAD. Tonight will be a farewell dinner at the St. Peter Stiftskeller.

Day 14 - Thursday, August 02:

Buffet breakfast at the hotel before boarding the coach and transferring to Munich airport for your return flight to Canada.
